Automotive

Electro Energy is developing battery modules and packs to address the many segments of the automotive market. For example, Electro Energy developed a bipolar battery system to convert a Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle (HEV) to a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) that enables the car to be driven over 20 miles on a single charge without gasoline using electrical energy from our utility grid, with fuel economy of equivalent to over 100 miles per gallon.

The scalability of the bipolar wafer cell makes it adaptable to the energy storage needs of a wide range of transportation sectors, from those with high voltage needs, like automotive and railroads, to those where space is at a premium, like scooters and electric bikes.

Since applications requirements and value propositions vary, Electro Energy offers both NiMH bipolar technology and Lithium-ion technology. The company is developing its patented wafer cell technology for the transportation industry using Lithium-ion chemistry.

The transportation segments that Electro Energy serves include:

Hybrid electric vehicles
A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) utilizes a high-power battery that works in conjunction with a conventional gasoline engine to provide power assist and improved fuel economy. Bipolar technology can greatly improve the efficiency and performance of the HEV by increasing power while freeing up more cargo space.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles
Electro Energy is applying the bipolar technology to help revolutionize plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), the next stage in the evolution of eco-friendly hybrid vehicles. This technology provides a “green” energy, with reduced emissions and green house gasses, while improving our energy security by substituting domestic electricity for imported oil as the source of energy.

Plug-in hybrids take advantage of the best of both gasoline and battery power. Batteries charge up from the standard household electricity when the vehicle is not in use, providing enough energy to power short trips and commutes. For longer drives, when the battery reserves are exhausted, the vehicle automatically switches to traditional gasoline-electric hybrid power.

PHEVs can run far longer than traditional hybrids on battery power alone, adding up to more hours of emission-free travel and fewer trips to the gas pump.

Electric bikes and scooters
Electro Energy’s bipolar battery design adds power and range to electric bikes and scooters, without adding bulk and weight, to make single-person electric transportation a more practical, sustainable alternative.

Commercial vehicles
Bipolar battery cells can be scaled to create plug-in hybrid fleets of buses, vans, trains and trucks. These plug-in hybrid fleets can be plugged right into the energy grid on city streets and railroad yards for recharging, and run longer on electric power before using more expensive fuel sources.
